Nebraska state sales and use tax rate is 5.5 percent. Local
sales and use taxes can be set at 0.5 percent, 1.0 percent, or 1.5 percent. Most
of the communities in the Metropolitan Omaha region impose a combined state and
local tax of 7 percent. Both Iowa and Nebraska impose special taxes on specific
items like cigarettes and motor fuels.
Iowa imposes a state tax rate of 5 percent with a maximum
of 1 percent local optional tax. Certain exceptions are provided, including
exemption of the sales of certain foods, prescription drugs, medical devices,
and farm and industrial machinery, equipment and computers. Iowa also offers a
brief "sales tax holiday" on clothing just prior to the opening of the school
year. In both Nebraska and Iowa, use taxes must be paid directly to the state by
individual taxpayers on such items like Internet or catalog purchases where
sales tax was not paid.
